AI and the Future of American Workers

  • AI is being deployed with too few safeguards, putting workers and vulnerable people at risk.

  • Just as we regulate food and drugs, we need thoughtful AI governance that serves the public rather than enables exploitation.

  • In Congress, I will introduce legislation prohibiting the use of AI as a justification for eliminating jobs, and ensuring strong privacy protections.

  • I will bring decades of experience researching and building responsible AI to Congress.

Why this matters

AI has quickly become a large part of the American economy and holds promise for future innovation and advancement. But it also poses real risks to American workers and families. AI data centers are driving up electricity demand and utility costs, AI chatbots are negatively impacting the mental health and well-being of our children, and AI automation is already eliminating thousands of jobs.

I have spent decades as an AI researcher. My longtime mentor and colleague is John Hopfield, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for foundational work in AI, and has urged caution in how the technology is used today. I have also used AI to build tools for early diagnosis of autism and helped turn that work into a company. I know first-hand how AI works, how it can help people, and the risks it poses.

We need comprehensive, common-sense regulations to ensure AI serves people rather than exploits them. In Congress, I will introduce legislation prohibiting the use of AI as a justification for eliminating jobs, ensuring that productivity gains from AI flow to workers rather than simply reducing headcount, requiring transparency when AI is used in consequential decisions, and mandating strong privacy protections. Congress urgently needs members who understand this technology, and I will provide that expertise.
